51,100 women and girls were murdered by someone they had a close relationship with last year, according to the UN agencies UN Women and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime. The report is being presented in connection with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
The highest number was in Africa, where 21,700 women fell victim to deadly violence in the home.
Even in Europe and America, it is primarily a partner or close family member who murders women in the home. Men are generally killed outside the home and by people outside the family.
"Approximately 80 percent of all murder victims in 2023 were men and 20 percent were women, but deadly violence within the family affects women to a much higher degree than men. Nearly 60 percent of all women who were intentionally killed in 2023 were victims of murder by close relatives/family members," the report states.
