Josefin Asplund and Hedda Stiernstedt sing for real in the film "Nova & Alice", the drama that gets its cinema premiere on September 13. But it was a challenge.
It's incredibly embarrassing. I started crying and thought it was really tough. We had to do like when you do sex scenes and have a "closed set", as it's called. I asked for it, says Hedda Stiernstedt.
Mistaken for Jakobs
Music scenes for the film were recorded, among other things, at festivals in Ulricehamn and Gothenburg. Before and after other artists performed, the actors rushed onto the stage to quickly record scenes in front of the audience.
There was an occasion when the audience thought I was Cornelia Jakobs. Then I had the same hairstyle as her and she was going to perform afterwards. So people started cheering. But then I came in and it just died, says Josefin Asplund and laughs.
It was important for the actors to be able to convincingly act as musicians.
We rehearsed a lot. But it's in Sweden, after all. There's never a budget to start something a year in advance. Bradley Cooper lowered his voice two octaves for "A Star is Born" and rehearsed for several years. We rehearsed for maybe two months, says Hedda Stiernstedt.
Odd Couple
She plays Alice, who ten years after breaking through in Melodifestivalen now has to struggle. Her career is on the decline.
To get her career going again, her manager (played by Johan Rheborg) pairs Alice with Nova, a star who wants to do her own thing. Integrity is important and a big audience is irrelevant.
It's an odd couple that goes on tour. At first, they keep their distance, but pretty soon both realize they've had the wrong idea about each other.
Nova sees what prejudices she's had about Alice and it turns out she's had it completely wrong. Unexpected things happen in her life, but I think also in Alice's life, says Josefin Asplund.
The music in the film is specially written by, among others, Molly Sandén and First Aid Kit and will be released in connection with the cinema premiere. But it's the end of the rock star life for Josefin Asplund and Hedda Stiernstedt.
We've gotten some weird requests about whether we should continue with this. Or if someone wants a record contract. And I don't feel..., I feel I'm too old for that, says Hedda Stiernstedt.
