It is expected to be a major shortage of cloudberries in the coming year, reports P4 Norrbotten.
One reason is that significantly fewer Thai berry pickers came to Sweden this summer compared to previous years. Instead of several thousand, 1,200 came.
The berry pickers also arrived late, as there were many rounds with the Migration Agency and the Migration Court before they received their work permits.
Unfortunately, it was a bit too late to pick cloudberries, which meant that the cloudberry season was almost over when they arrived, says Fredrik Reinholdsson at Olle Svenssons party business, one of Sweden's largest berry companies.
The shortage of cloudberries is also expected to lead to higher prices in stores.
The cloudberry shortage is also due to climate factors, according to Mattis Bergquist, sustainability manager at Coop.
This is something we will have to deal with not only when it comes to berries, but it applies to all seasonal fruits and vegetables, says Mattis Bergquist.
