Businesswoman Halla Tómasdóttir becomes new president of Iceland, according to the results of Saturday's election. She defeated former Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir, whom critics argue is too political for the position.
Iceland's president has largely a ceremonial role, but also has the authority to veto legislation. The outgoing president Gudni Jóhannesson is very popular, but announced in his New Year's speech that he will not seek re-election.
