Five nights in a row, violence has broken out in the capital Belgrad and other cities in Serbia. Demonstrators for and against the government have fired distress rockets and thrown stones and bottles at each other.

The police have in turn fired tear gas and stun grenades at the perpetrators of violence. So far, over 130 police officers have been injured in the unrest, according to Vucic.

Late on Saturday evening, angry demonstrators also set fire to a local office belonging to Vucic's ruling party SNS in the city of Valjevo.

In a television speech on Sunday, the president accuses the regime-critical demonstrators of "terrorism" and repeats claims that the protests have been staged by the West to destroy Serbia.

Our country is in great danger, they have threatened our values, our ordinary lives and every individual, says Vucic and promises to take action against the perpetrators of violence.

He says that the government needs a few days to prepare measures against the demonstrators, but that no state of emergency will be introduced.

You will see the full determination of the Serbian state. We will use all available means to restore the law, peace and order, he says.

The protests against the regime and corruption in the country have been going on since November last year when 16 people died in a roof collapse at a train station in the city of Novi Sad.
