The accident occurred on Saturday during a manoeuvre with the aircraft, an F-4 Phantom. The exact cause of the accident is still unclear, but the plane rapidly lost altitude before crashing on a runway at the Tanagra air base, according to ERT.

The plane exploded as it hit the ground, and images from the scene show a large column of smoke rising into the sky, a few hundred metres from the visitors. There are no reports of spectators being injured in the accident.
