The accident occurred just after 6 pm on the E4 highway near Norsholm outside Norrköping.
A car collided with a truck trailer and ended up partially under it. The driver of the car, a man in his 30s, died from his injuries.
The truck driver was arrested by the police and detained overnight on suspicion of gross negligence leading to another's death and gross reckless driving.
Both vehicles were seized by the police.
The E4 highway was completely closed in the southbound direction after the accident, but by 10 pm the police announced that traffic was flowing again.
