One of Saudi Arabia's highest-ranking military officials is visiting Iran, according to state-run Iranian media.
The Saudi military's chief of staff, Fayyad al-Ruwaii, is said to be arriving with a delegation of military dignitaries on Sunday. In Iran, he is to meet with the Iranian chief of staff, Mohammad Bagheri, and according to Iranian news reports, the idea is for the countries to strengthen their military ties.
Sunni Muslim Saudi Arabia and Shia Muslim Iran have long been on opposite sides of many conflicts in the region – such as in Syria and Yemen – but agreed last year to resume normal diplomatic relations. This was achieved with the mediation of China.
A few weeks ago, Saudi Arabia announced that its military was participating in a military exercise in the Gulf of Oman together with Iran and several other countries.
