ADF rebels killed civilians in the Irumu area bordering Uganda. A spokesperson for the UN force in eastern Congo calls the attack a "bloodbath".
–About 30 civilians were killed between Thursday and Friday, July 11 ... based on information from civil society, the death toll has risen from 31 to 66 civilians, says Jean Tobie Okala.
All the victims, including women, were killed with machetes, according to a local leader. The attack is suspected to be a revenge for an escalated bombing campaign carried out jointly by forces from Congo and Uganda.
ADF is an Islamist group from Uganda, with links to IS, operating on both sides of the border.
The attack comes as Congo-Kinshasa has recently signed a peace agreement with Rwanda, and hopes for an end to the violence from the Rwanda-backed rebel group M23.
