In the beginning of October, Fifa (International Football Association) announced that the extraordinary congress on December 11 would vote on the two championships in one block. In other words, a no-vote to Saudi Arabia 2034 would also automatically mean a no-vote to Spain, Portugal, and Morocco 2030.
Now, the general secretary of the Norwegian Football Association, Karl-Petter Løken, tells the online newspaper idrettspolitikk.no that there will be no formal voting for the 211 member associations. The decisions will be made through acclamation, he writes in an SMS.
The Fifa congress will be held digitally, and it is unclear whether the acclamation will take place through silent approval, yes-or-no shouts, applause, or in some other way.
The general secretary of the Dutch Football Association, Gijs de Jong, has previously signaled that a formal vote will be dropped since there is only one bid per World Championship and both applications have been approved by Fifa. Moreover, Saudi Arabia has already secured a majority of the votes, according to de Jong.
The Saudi Arabian association has confirmations of support from 150 of the 211 Fifa members, says Gijs de Jong, according to idrettspolitikk.no, to the Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant.
The first three matches of the World Championship 2030 will be decided in South American Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay. This is to commemorate that it has been 100 years since the first World Championship was held in Uruguay.
