Both Manchester City and Tottenham had convincing wins from last weekend's English football premiere.
In the meeting at Etihad Stadium, it was surprisingly the home team that came back down to earth.
A quick turnaround from Tottenham resulted in 1–0 in the 35th minute, when Brennan Johnson struck directly from Richarlison's pass from the right.
There would be more – much thanks to City goalkeeper James Trafford.
The 22-year-old, who this summer returned to City from Burnley, made his first league match in front of the home crowd. In stoppage time in the first half, Trafford made a mistake on a kick-off, the ball ended up in Tottenham's possession and João Palhinha could push in 2–0 – a real cold shower for City before the half-time break.
In the second half, Lucas Bergvall was substituted in the final minutes for "Spurs". Tottenham held on and stands on six points and 5–0 in goal difference after two matches. A better start, new Danish coach Thomas Frank could hardly wish for.
In the next round, Tottenham will host Bournemouth.
