The countries have a preliminary agreement to hold new talks and the first one can take place within the next two weeks, says Rjabkov to the state-controlled news agency Ria. He says that the meeting will be held in a third country, but it is not yet clear which one.
According to Rjabkov, the meetings aim to resolve issues that are causing friction between the countries – in line with what was said between Foreign Ministers Sergey Lavrov and Marco Rubio during their meeting in Saudi Arabia earlier in the week.
The Americans are currently reviewing them (the issues raised by Russia), says Sergey Rjabkov according to Ria.
At the meeting between Lavrov and Rubio, the countries agreed to re-establish diplomatic contacts and lay the groundwork for negotiations on Russia's invasion of Ukraine. During three years of war, the US and its allies have been sanctioning the regime in Moscow and seeking to isolate it as punishment, but the new US administration has changed its stance and says it wants to bring a quick end to the war.
According to Iran's Foreign Ministry, Russia's Foreign Minister will visit Tehran on Tuesday. Sergey Lavrov was there last in October 2023, and Russia has so far, in its increasingly isolated position, sought support from Iran, which is also subject to a large number of sanctions.
