During 2024, Russian forces have advanced nearly 4,000 square kilometers in Ukraine, according to an AFP analysis of data from the think tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
This corresponds to an area larger than Gotland, and is, according to AFP, seven times more than the Russians advanced last year.
The relatively large advance is attributed primarily to the rapid Russian troop movements in the autumn. In October, Russian military forces captured 610 square kilometers of land in Ukraine, and in November, an additional 725. This constituted the largest monthly Russian advances since the first months of the full-scale war.
