Unconfirmed videos show how the night sky is lit up by explosions as high-rise buildings in various parts of Moscow are hit by drone parts.
Of the hundreds of drones sent into Russia, up to 100 are believed to have reached Moscow and its surroundings – approximately 400 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. Mayor Sergey Sobyanin reports that at least 60 drones have been stopped by Moscow's air defense. He describes relatively minor damage.
However, Governor Andrey Vorobyov reports at least two civilian fatalities and several injuries. And unconfirmed eyewitness accounts speak of high-rise buildings on fire.
"The largest drone attack in history has been directed at Moscow and the surrounding region," comments Andriy Kovalenko from Ukraine's Security Council, according to the AFP news agency. "This is a new signal to Putin that he should be interested in a ceasefire in the air."
The attacks come as Ukrainian and American representatives meet in Saudi Arabia for discussions on a first step towards a ceasefire. Ukraine is reported to be proposing a ceasefire that would initially only apply in the air and at sea – to make it easier to monitor.
So far, however, the war is continuing in full force on all fronts. Ukraine's air force alerted during the night that Russia was also attacking Ukrainian regions with drones.
And Russia claims successes in a counteroffensive against Ukraine's territorial gains in the Russian Kursk region. "Twelve communities have been liberated during the offensive," it is reported.
