It was on Friday that the forest fire broke out in the national park around the volcano in southern Italy and during Sunday, the fire department announced that it was still out of control.

A hundred firefighters are working to extinguish the extensive fire, together with six Canadian and three Italian firefighting planes. At the same time, further reinforcements are on their way to the national park, according to the Italian public service channel Rai.

"For safety reasons and to facilitate firefighting and cleanup work in the affected areas, all activities along Vesuvius National Park's hiking trails are cancelled until further notice", the park announced in a statement on Saturday.

During 2024, around 620,000 people visited the volcano's crater.
