A leader of the Islamist rebel movement, commander Abd al-Ghani, confirms that opposition forces have taken the Syrian metropolis Homs, and calls the event "historic".
The commander says that the rebels have opened the gates of the city's prison.
"Our forces have managed to free over 3,500 prisoners from the prison in Homs", writes Hassan Abd al-Ghani on Telegram late on Saturday.
He added that rebel groups "are searching through the city's different parts" in an ongoing advance.
al-Ghani has previously assured that religious minorities in Syria will not be subjected to violence, reports AFP.
