A German truck driver who ran over the Italian cyclist Davide Rebellin is sentenced to four years in prison for causing another person's death and failing to assist a person in distress.
It was at the end of November 2022 that the 51-year-old Rebellin, who was still active as a professional cyclist, was run over in a roundabout in Montebello Vicentino in northeastern Italy.
The truck driver, who is in his 65s, could be identified through surveillance cameras at the scene, but was not arrested by German police until the summer of 2023.
Rebellin took Olympic Games silver in the road race in Beijing 2008, but was stripped of his medal due to doping and was banned for two years. His doping sample from the Olympic Games was analyzed in the spring of 2009 using a new method, and then traces of the blood doping substance cera were detected.
