According to local authorities, they are conscious but are being treated with respirators.

They are suspected to have been poisoned after eating a locally produced pesto called "O P'tits Oignons" during a birthday meal.

Authorities are now trying to locate around 600 jars of the pesto before they reach consumers.

Botulism is a rare and serious neurological disease caused by a bacterium that, when allowed to grow, forms a highly potent toxin that causes respiratory difficulties, muscle paralysis, and in up to ten percent of cases, death. The bacterium is naturally found in certain foods, but is usually destroyed during preparation and preservation.

The toxin is one of the strongest known. A "snaps glass" of pure botulinum toxin would be enough to kill the entire Swedish population.
