Vicario made numerous saves but needed treatment for his injured foot in the first half.
Despite the pain and the limitations the injury imposed, he continued to play.
It was immediately established after the match that the foot injury required surgery. Vicario underwent the operation on Monday. He then wrote on his Instagram account:
"Sometimes you experience highs in football, sometimes it challenges you in ways you don't expect. I played 60 minutes at Etihad with a broken bone in my foot, but gave absolutely everything I had for the team. Unfortunately, there was no way around this. I needed surgery."
"The operation went well. I will work hard to come back stronger, fresher, and ready to give everything again".
Fraser Forster, 36, will take over between Tottenham's goalposts for the time being.
Vicario's decision to finish the match despite a severe injury brought back memories to life in Manchester. In 1956, City's goalkeeper, former German prisoner of war Bert Trautmann, finished the FA Cup final despite breaking a vertebra in his neck in the 73rd minute. City won the final against Birmingham 3–1.
In a World Championship qualifying match against Scotland in 1997, national team midfielder Stefan Schwarz played on for ten minutes despite a fracture in his shinbone.
