Near the community of Shahbaz, a bus collided with a fuel tanker. In the other accident, a bus crashed into a truck in the Andar district.
Both accidents occurred in Ghazni province, on the same highway that connects the capital Kabul with the city of Kandahar further south, late on Wednesday according to local authorities.
The injured have been taken to hospitals in Ghazni and the authorities are handing over the bodies to the families, says Hafiz Omar, spokesperson for the province's governor.
Earlier, reports from the Taliban government stated that 52 people had been killed and 65 injured.
