Hamdan Ballal was released after spending the night in a police station on the West Bank. According to his lawyer Lea Tsemel, the director was forced to sleep on the floor, despite his severe injuries.
Hamdan Ballal was beaten on Monday in his hometown of Susiya on the West Bank by three people in military uniforms while another person filmed the incident, according to his wife Lamia Ballal, as reported by the news agency AP.
Among other things, Ballal was hit by the soldiers' rifle butts, according to Lamia Ballal.
Another witness, Ballal's director colleague Basel Adra, claims that Susiya was attacked by about 30 settlers, some of whom were masked and armed.
"Every day"
After the attack, Ballal was taken away by the Israeli military, who later claimed to have detained three people suspected of throwing stones at soldiers and Israeli civilians.
Every day since we came back from the Oscars has been an attack on us. It feels like a revenge action against us for making the film. It feels like a punishment, says Adra to AP.
"No other land" was awarded an Oscar for best documentary at the gala on March 2. The film depicts residents on the West Bank trying to prevent the Israeli military from demolishing their village. The film is made by four people, in addition to the Palestinians Ballal and Adra, also the Israelis Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor.
Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967, and more than 500,000 Israeli settlers have moved to the disputed area since then. During the war in Gaza, there has been an increase in attacks on Palestinians carried out by settlers, while the number of Palestinian attacks on Israelis has also risen.
