The nominations were to be announced on January 13, but were postponed until the 17th. Now it is announced that the voting period will be extended even further, and the announcement will come on Thursday, January 23.
The American Film Academy's CEO Bill Kramer and the Academy's Chairman Janet Yang write in a joint press release that they are devastated by the effects of the fires and the severe losses that many have experienced, and that they count on the industry's support for the decision.
"Since we want to be responsive to the region's needs for infrastructure and housing over the coming weeks, it feels necessary that we make some adjustments to our event schedule", the duo writes.
The Oscars ceremony itself is not being moved, the 97th gala will take place on Sunday, March 2.
