Norwegian Diplomats Leave Beirut

Several Norwegian diplomats are leaving Beirut, after the security situation in Lebanon has deteriorated with Israeli attacks against the capital and against the UN force in the country in recent days.

The country's ambassador will, however, stay on for the time being, along with a few other diplomats, the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announces in a press release.

"A bomb has struck near the Norwegian embassy in Beirut. Some of the stationed Norwegian diplomats are therefore leaving Lebanon for a period," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs writes in a press release.

No one is injured. The impact did not occur very close, but it did occur in the vicinity, says press spokesperson Ragnhild Håland Simenstad to NTB.

The Norwegian embassy in Beirut has recently helped over 100 Norwegian citizens leave the country, according to Norwegian Dagbladet.

The security situation, however, makes it difficult for the embassy to assist people in Lebanon going forward, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs states, urging Norwegian citizens who are there to leave the country.

The fact that the Norwegian embassy now has fewer diplomats left in the country also reduces the possibility of getting help, according to Ragnhild Håland Simenstad.

Around 80 Norwegian citizens have registered that they are in Lebanon.
