The police in Tromsø conducted "a number" of forensic investigations on board the Norwegian-flagged vessel that arrived at Tromsø harbor just before 07:00 on Friday.
The crew consists of eleven Russian citizens, and Latvian authorities suspect that someone on board was involved in a previous cable sabotage.
The suspicions remain, announced Ronny Jørgensen on Friday evening, despite the police not having found any evidence on board that could link the vessel to the incident.
Russian crew
The current cargo ship is called Silver Dania, built in 1989 and is over 113 meters long, according to NRK.
The current damage was caused to a data cable between Gotland and the Latvian Ventspils in the Baltic Sea on Sunday. The cable lay at a depth of 50 meters and is owned by the Latvian state radio and TV center. The suspected cable sabotage is classified as gross vandalism.
Silver Dania sails between the two Russian cities of St. Petersburg and Murmansk, according to the police. The route thus passes through the Gulf of Finland, the Baltic Sea, and the Öresund, and then along the entire Norwegian coast northwards and passes Tromsø.
No anchor out?
Tormod Bo Fossmark, CEO of the shipping company Silver Sea in Bergen, which owns Silver Dania, claims that they have done nothing wrong.
We have sailed through the current area near Gotland at 13.5 knots at the current time. We have not had any anchor out, says Fossmark to the trade magazine Fiskeribladet.
Silver Sea is the only Norwegian shipping company that has not broken off fisheries cooperation with Russia in light of the country's war of aggression against Ukraine, writes Fiskeribladet.
