Postponing the introduction of new EU rules against deforestation to December 2025 is a good idea, according to both the EU Parliament and EU member states.
However, starting to change the already established rules is met with a firm no from the member states. This message comes after an ambassador meeting in Brussels on Wednesday, according to information to TT.
Thus, the EU Parliament must backtrack on the changes driven through by a majority last week, primarily with support from the right and far-right. Critics argue that the changes water down the proposal, while there is also a risk of regulatory chaos from the turn of the year if the changes are not finalized in time.
The Parliament is now instead urged to make a new decision on the postponement, preferably already at next week's session in Strasbourg.
The rules concern the EU's so-called deforestation directive, EUDR, which was to have come into force from December 30 this year.
