In Slovakia, the EU election was overshadowed by the assassination attempt on Prime Minister Robert Fico in mid-May. However, Fico's nationalist party Smer did not become the country's largest party in the election, unlike what recent opinion polls had suggested.
Instead, Progressive Slovakia received the most votes, with a support of 27.8%, according to the results reported by Slovakian media.
Populist Smer becomes the second-largest party with 24.8%.
Pro-Russian Fico was shot several times while appearing in the town of Handlova. At the end of May, he was discharged from hospital, to recover and receive care at home.
