Unpleasant scenes unfolded in the NHL match between Philadelphia and Colorado. Referee Mitch Dunning collided with a player, was carried out on a stretcher and taken to hospital.

It was in the first period that Dunning collided with Colorado goalie Josh Manson. Dunning then lay on the ice before being carried out on a stretcher. He was then taken to the hospital and is reported to be doing well under the circumstances, according to the NHL's website.

You never want to see something like that happen. It's very tough. Hopefully, he's okay, says Colorado star Cale Makar.

The match then continued with one referee and two linesmen. Colorado won 3–2.

I didn't even see it. But the report I got after the match was that he could move his arms and legs, which is good. It seems like he's okay, says Philadelphia coach John Tortorella.

Mitch Dunning is doing his seventh season as an NHL referee this year.
