In two days, Nordic and Baltic prime ministers have met at Harpsund together with Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Much has been about the tense security policy situation and continued support to Ukraine.
On Thursday, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) and Donald Tusk signed a new strategic cooperation agreement. The focus is on economy and security policy.
With the agreement, the ties between Poland and Sweden are stronger than ever before in modern times, says Kristersson at a press conference together with Tusk.
Poland's security is Sweden's security and from now on, our security is also yours. I am very pleased about it, says Ulf Kristersson.
"No illusions"
The press conference was held after the two had taken a traditional boat tour in Harpsund. Kristersson says that Europe is facing several major challenges, not least strengthening military capabilities, helping Ukraine, and countering the threat from Russia.
We harbor no illusions about what lies ahead. Much work remains, says Kristersson.
But both Sweden and Poland have the intention to do what is required.
Sweden and Poland will, among other things, work to counter Russia's aggressive actions in the nearby area. The agreement also states that they will focus on building up the capability to resist new types of threats against, for example, critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea.
"New experience"
Tusk says that the draft of the deepened cooperation will be presented to NATO and that it should not be seen as controversial with bilateral cooperation between individual NATO countries.
He highlights the cooperation between Poland, the Nordic countries, and the Baltic states as something unique.
This is a new experience. It is the first time I see a group of so closely tied countries, which even in the most difficult issues – such as a war in Ukraine – think alike.
