A mayor in southwestern Mexico has been shot dead in an attack on a square in the middle of the city, according to reports from the regional government in Michoacán. The government condemns the murder of the mayor of Cotija.
The death notice comes a day after Claudia Sheinbaum was declared the winner of the presidential election, following a campaign in the shadow of gang violence.
As the country's first female president, her biggest challenge may be to tackle the drug-related violence in Mexico. Like the current president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Sheinbaum, who was previously the mayor of Mexico City, plans to focus on social measures. The strategy has been called "hugs, not bullets," and has been criticized as too soft by the right-wing opposition.
