Russia's Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin has signed a decree to withdraw from the treaty on torture, reports The Kyiv Independent.
The country ratified the convention in 1998. It allows independent inspectors to carry out checks in prisons and detention centers in the countries that have signed the agreement.
After the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russia has been accused on several occasions of regular and systematic torture of Ukrainian prisoners of war.
The matter is now with President Vladimir Putin, who will decide whether Russia withdraws or stands by the convention.
