Six German national team cyclists were taken to hospital after being hit by a car on the Spanish island of Mallorca on Monday. All six, all track cyclists, are said to have escaped serious injury, but several of them have suffered broken bones and are expected to be out of training and competition for a longer period, writes the German Cycling Federation on its website.
Among the injured are Benjamin Boos and Bruno Kessler, who were part of the team that took bronze with Germany in the World Championship last autumn, as well as multiple junior world champion Tobias Buck-Gramcko.
Cycling has been plagued by many accidents in training environments on the roads in recent years. As recently as Friday, the promising Italian cyclist Sara Piffer died after being hit outside Bolzano in northern Italy.
