Over 3,000 people have fallen ill and more than a hundred have died in cholera in Angola.

The outbreak has been ongoing since the turn of the year, but the number of deaths has increased in recent days, according to information from the health department. Almost half of the deaths have been registered in the capital city of Luanda.

Cholera is a feared diarrheal disease caused by a bacterium that is spread, among other things, through contaminated water or food. The disease is most common in countries with poorly functioning water and sewage systems. It causes watery diarrhea, vomiting, and cramps.

Angola, in western Africa north of Namibia, is rich in natural resources such as oil. The country is still struggling with widespread poverty.
