As recently as in June, Iran's highest court revoked a death sentence against him and ordered a new trial in the case. But a new complaint regarding one of his songs has been filed, according to Salehi's lawyer Amir Raisian.
I have not yet been present at (an interrogation about) the case as a lawyer, but Salehi has been informed of the charges of blasphemy and incitement to riot, he says.
Salehi was arrested in the autumn of 2022 in connection with the widespread protests that broke out after a young woman died in the notorious morality police's custody, where she was taken because she was not considered to have worn her hijab correctly.
Due to Salehi's political texts, he was accused, among other things, of "spreading corruption in the world". State-controlled media pointed him out as a key figure in the nationwide protests.
Over 100 people in the global music industry, including Coldplay and Sting, signed a statement calling for the release of the 33-year-old. According to lawyer Raisian, Salehi will not be released until the new case is settled.
