During 2024, 19.4 million physical visits were made, report 145 museum organizations, which is an increase of 4 percent compared to 2023. Furthermore, digital visits have also increased – to 26 million on the museums' websites, and 11 million visits to the digital collections.
"By meeting the audience where they are – on social media, in podcasts, and in digital collections – museums have not only strengthened their engagement, but also broadened their reach in an impressive way," says Gunnar Ardelius, Secretary General of Swedish Museums in a press release.
He emphasizes that cultural funding has simultaneously been eroded and stresses that museums need long-term support.
In 2024, 58 percent of the responding museum organizations had free admission to all or parts of their operations.
The most visited museum of all was Skansen, with 1.4 million visitors, followed by the Vasa Museum and the Nordic Museum, which also exceeded one million visitors each.
