When you say "cut", you don't want anyone to go to their phone to check their Facebook account, says the Oscar-nominated director.

It is in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, cited by The Hollywood Reporter, that the Dune director discusses his relationship with technology.

I feel that people are controlled by algorithms right now. We're behaving like AI circuits. We're disconnected from each other and society is somehow falling apart. It's scary, he says.

Villeneuve describes mobile phones as "addictive" and a major distraction.

Film is an act of presence. When an artist paints, he must be fully focused on the color he puts on the canvas. It's the same with a dancer's movements. When it comes to film, an entire team needs to focus and be fully present in the moment and in relation to each other, says Denis Villeneuve.
