Minister of Finance Elisabeth Svantesson (M) understands that it can be chaotic for permanent residents in popular tourist resorts.

But a tourist tax is not the solution, according to her.

The answer to that problem would be a tax, we are all skeptical about that at this table, says Svantesson, referring to the governing parties.

The solution to our problems is not always higher taxes. On the other hand, I have full understanding for that it can get messy in certain municipalities, for example in Visby during the so-called Stockholm week.

Svantesson also points out that many municipalities are happy about tourists since it provides many job opportunities.

SVT has asked the chairman and vice chairman of the municipal council in 30 municipalities with many guest nights if they want to allow a tourist tax in their municipality. In eleven of the municipalities, one or both politicians answer yes. Eight of the municipalities did not respond at all.

The question of allowing municipal tourist taxes has been raised in the Riksdag before. In a motion from 2022, for example, the former Minister of Rural Affairs Anna-Caren Sätherberg (S) proposed an overnight fee of 10-30 kronor.
