The 39-year-old Messi most likely made his last World Cup appearance in Sunday's World Cup final. Much of the focus ahead of the final was on Messi and Spain's young star Lamine Yamal.
But on the field, it was Yamal who was most visible.
Messi played an anonymous role for 118 minutes. In the final two minutes, Messi sprang to life a couple of times and was behind Guiliano Simeone's great chance to equalise.
But Messi suffered a stinging loss - and after receiving his silver medal from Donald Trump, he could not hold back his tears.
"I hope everyone is proud of him and what he has achieved, because he is the best football player of all time," said national team captain Lionel Scaloni, according to the AP.
