Connor Hellebuyck asks fans to respect his privacy after trade from Winnipeg to New Jersey

Star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck went on strike, got into a fight and was eventually traded from Winnipeg. Now he’s explaining himself to fans of the NHL team in an open letter.

“I want everyone to know that this was an incredibly difficult decision. After much consideration and discussion, we decided that a change was best for our family,” Hellebuyck wrote on Instagram.

“We have chosen to keep these personal circumstances to ourselves, and I hope people can respect that.”

On October 23, Hellebuyck left Winnipeg after 11 seasons in a major trade to New Jersey. At the time, he had been at odds with the club for some time.

The 33-year-old said he had been asking for a trade since the summer. He ended up not showing up for Winnipeg’s training camp and was suspended without pay.

Hellebuyck has been named the NHL’s best goaltender three times and was named the league’s most valuable player for the 2024-25 season.

He led the United States to Olympic gold in February.
