Trump’s Midterm Election Setback Could Put FIFA President Gianni Infantino in the Hot Seat

The setback for US President Donald Trump in the midterm elections could create a headache for Gianni Infantino. The FIFA president may have to testify before the Judiciary Committee.

This summer, Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee confirmed that they had launched an investigation into Gianni Infantino. The committee wants to establish whether FIFA, the world soccer governing body, paid money to Donald Trump and his family, how Trump was awarded the FIFA Peace Prize, and what happened to the now-scrapped proposal to sell shares in the World Cup to private investors.

Previously, Infantino could avoid appearing at a hearing thanks to the Republican majority in the House of Representatives.

But now that it is clear the Democrats will take control of the House of Representatives after the midterm elections, the situation has changed. The committee has the authority to threaten legal sanctions if Infantino fails to appear at a hearing.

On September 23, a committee spokesperson said FIFA’s willingness to cooperate in the matter so far had been “highly inadequate.”
