"Limiting a woman's right to choose whether she should terminate an unwanted pregnancy is the same as denying her control over her own body. This conviction I have carried with me throughout my entire adult life", she writes in her memoirs, which will be published in the USA next week, reports The Guardian.
Criticized about the Supreme Court
The book is being released in the final stretch of an election campaign where abortion rights have played a central role. Her husband Donald Trump has made a point of taking credit for the country's highest court – thanks to his conservative judicial appointments – revoking the Roe vs Wade ruling in 2022 and thereby the federal right to abortion.
However, the strict stance is not popular among broad voter groups. It has been a strong reason for the Democrats to win elections even in traditionally conservative states.
Dual Messages
Trump has tried to appease more liberal voters by stating that he does not want to see a national ban, but instead let each state decide, as is currently the case. However, he has announced that he will vote no to maintaining the basic protection for abortions in his home state of Florida in the referendum to be held in November.
If Melania Trump were to vote in such a referendum, she would likely, judging by her book, vote yes to maintain abortion rights.
