The exercise Joint Sea 2025 will take place both in the air and at sea near the Russian port city of Vladivostok, which is located opposite Japan's west coast. Last year, a similar exercise was held in the South China Sea off southern China.
The countries have strengthened their relationship in recent years, as China has been able to help Russia economically during the sanctions that Western countries have introduced due to Russia's invasion war in Ukraine.
Japan's Ministry of Defense stated in an annual report earlier this year that China's increasingly extensive military cooperation with Russia poses a serious security threat.
According to the Chinese Ministry of Defense's spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang, the exercise is not directed against any other country, and has no connection to current international or regional situations.
