Excavations have been ongoing at the excavation site in the city's historic center since 2023. Initially, archaeologists discovered a well-preserved medieval tombstone, made of Gotland limestone - a highly sought-after material during the Middle Ages. The tombstone is decorated with an engraved image of a knight wearing a ring armor, with a sword and a shield.
In early July, the tombstone was lifted, and underneath it was a complete skeleton of an adult man, who is believed to have lived around the 1200s or 1300s, report the Polish archaeologists.
The discovery "provides an invaluable source of knowledge about life and death within Gdańsk's military elite during the 1200s and 1300s, about medieval burial traditions and about cultural connections across the Baltic Sea", says archaeologist Sylwia Kurzyńska to CNN.
Experts are now working further to analyze the tombstone and the skeleton.
