Donald Trump has sent conflicting signals about how the USA will guarantee Ukraine's security after a peace agreement. American soldiers on Ukrainian soil are however ruled out, he now states. Possibly the support can instead take place via the air.

Ukraine will not become part of NATO and ground forces will be provided by other countries, announces the President of the USA in an interview with Fox News.

France, Germany and the United Kingdom want forces on the ground in Ukraine, he says.

The USA is ready to support in other ways, according to Trump. For example, it may become relevant to support potential European forces in Ukraine "via air".

"Will be guarantees"

At the same time, Trump emphasizes that Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelenskyj must be "flexible" in the negotiations.

Work is already underway to concretize the promised security guarantees for Ukraine after the war, announced Zelenskyj just before Trump's interview.

"Today we continue the coordination at the leadership level", he wrote on X continued:

"We will also continue to work tomorrow. National security advisers are also in constant contact now. There will be security guarantees."

"Warm feeling"

During Monday's Ukraine meetings in Washington, between Trump, Zelenskyj and several European leaders, Trump promised American security guarantees for Ukraine. Later, however, he stated that the USA will instead "coordinate" the guarantees in question.

Exactly what the guarantees entail is still unclear.

It is also unclear whether Russia's president Vladimir Putin actually wants peace. In the Fox News interview, Trump says "we'll see over the next two weeks".

On a question about the meeting with Putin in Alaska on Friday, Trump describes a "warm feeling" between the two presidents.

When he stepped off his plane and I stepped off my plane, there was a warmth there that you can't... It's a fine feeling, he says.
