Want to see presidential meeting
Trump has announced on his social media platform Truth Social that he wants to arrange a meeting between Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyj and Russia's President Vladimir Putin, to discuss a peace agreement. It is not yet decided when this meeting will take place.
Zelenskyj has stated that he is ready to meet Putin, and says that Ukraine must be allowed to participate in all talks concerning Ukraine's territories.
Silence from Putin
Putin has not yet commented on Monday's meeting. He has also not confirmed whether he will participate in a meeting with Zelenskyj. From the Russian side, however, there are reports that Russia may consider exploring the possibility of raising the diplomatic status of the talks. Ukraine has long criticized Russia for sending low-ranking diplomats without a mandate to make any decisions to meetings between Russia and Ukraine.
Trump and the German Chancellor Friedrich Merz say that Putin has agreed to hold a bilateral meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyj within the next two weeks.
Unclear security guarantees
The meeting has brought Ukraine closer to security guarantees, but what these will entail is unclear. Zelenskyj said late last night that Ukraine, together with its allies, will formalize the terms of these security guarantees within ten days.
French President Emmanuel Macron said after the meeting that they had agreed that the Ukrainian defense should not be restricted in a peace talk.
Good tone
The tone between Zelenskyj and Trump was significantly better than the last time they met. At the meeting tonight, Zelenskyj wore a suit, in contrast to the military uniform he wore at the White House in February, when he was scolded by Trump and Vice President JD Vance for his attire.
