The Venetian Renaissance master Tizian's work "Rest during the Flight to Egypt" has been sold at the auction house Christie's in London for approximately 236 million kronor, reports BBC.
The painting is equally famous for its motif – the biblical story of Mary's, Joseph's, and Jesus' flight from King Herod to Egypt – as for its tumultuous journey between different owners.
It has, among other things, been stolen on two occasions: by French soldiers during the Napoleonic Wars in the 19th century and later from the Marquess of Bath's residence in English Wiltshire in 1995. Seven years later, it was found in a plastic bag at a bus stop in London.
Tizian painted the work in 1510, when he was 20 years old. The auction sum is the highest that has been paid for one of his paintings so far.
