The forensic pathologist Mauricio Casinelli participated in the autopsy of the football legend and stated during his testimony that water had accumulated in Maradona's lungs "for at least ten days".
The Argentine football star died at the age of 60 on November 25, 2020.
He was being cared for at home after a brain operation due to a blood clot. Casinelli said that his medical team should have discovered his poor condition.
According to Casinelli, Maradona's heart weighed almost twice as much as a normal heart and that he must have had severe suffering for up to twelve hours before his death.
Maradona died of heart failure and acute pulmonary edema, where fluid accumulates in the lungs, two weeks after the brain operation.
The seven defendants in his medical team are charged with having acted negligently and risk prison sentences of between eight and 25 years.
Approximately 120 witnesses are expected to participate in the trial, which is expected to continue until July.
