Around 200 cows have died in a barn fire on a dairy farm in Nora municipality. The police and rescue services were alerted to the scene by a newspaper delivery person just before 4 am.
The newspaper delivery person discovered the fire. 200 animals have perished, including 100 dairy cows plus young animals and calves, says Peter Persson, duty officer at the police in Region Bergslagen.
A large rescue effort has been underway during the morning at the scene, focusing on stopping the fire from spreading to nearby buildings, which has now been achieved.
Already when the alarm was raised, the barn was almost completely engulfed in flames and no animals could be saved, says Ilona Lindholm at SOS Alarm.
At 7 am, SOS Alarm reports that the rescue services have managed to extinguish large parts of the fire, but the extinguishing work will continue throughout the day.
We will maintain surveillance of the site to ensure that the fire does not start again, says Oscar Siljehav Lilja, duty officer at the Rescue Service Region Bergslagen.
The police left the scene during the morning but will return later to cordon off the area around the farm, according to Gabriel Henning, press spokesperson for the police region Bergslagen.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
