The former general secretary of Uefa, Gerhard Aigner, has died.
The Swiss man was 80 years old, and was for many years the right-hand man to Swedish Lennart Johansson in the international organisation. The Swede worked during that period as president for Uefa (European Football Association).
Among other things, Aigner worked closely with Johansson during the development of the Champions League.
Aigner was general secretary between 1989 and 2003.
During Thursday's European Championship match between Denmark and England, the former Uefa official was honoured with a minute's applause, on Uefa's initiative. The same will happen during Thursday's late match between Spain and Italy.
