The volcano Krasjeninnikov sent ash six kilometers up in the air during the outbreak on Sunday night. The ash spread over uninhabited areas, according to the authorities in Kamtjatka.

Prior to this, Krasjeninnikov had been dormant for several hundred years. Exactly how long depends on who you ask. Olga Girina, head of the task force responsible for volcanic eruptions in Kamtjatka, claims that Sunday's outbreak is the first in 600 years. The American Smithsonian Institute, on the other hand, believes that the volcano had an outbreak as recently as 1550, 475 years ago.

Sunday's outbreak triggered an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0. A tsunami warning was issued for parts of Kamtjatka. Earlier in the week, another earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 occurred near the Kamtjatka peninsula, triggering tsunami waves in Japan, Russia, and Alaska.

On Sunday evening, the task force in Kamtjatka announced that the volcano's activity had decreased, but that there is still a risk of some explosive activity.
