The Left Alliance's Frente Amplio candidate Yamandú Orsi stands as the winner in Uruguay's presidential election after five years of conservative rule.
With sorrow, but without guilt, we can congratulate the winner, says Álvaro Delgado, the presidential candidate for the country's ruling conservative coalition.
Orsi's election campaign was strengthened by support from the popular former president Jose "Pepe" Mujica, who during his rule from 2010-2015 was referred to as "the world's poorest president" as he, among other things, donated most of his salary to charity and drove around in an old Volkswagen.
Sitting President Luis Lacalle Pou announces that he has congratulated Orsi, 57, on his victory in a phone call and that he will be available for a smooth transition.
